Lifeblood: The Essential Car Fluids

The importance of car fluids for a car cannot be emphasized enough. When car owners see reminders to check these fluids often, it should be taken seriously. Here are some of these essential car fluids.

1.Engine Oil

This is one of the first fluids most car owners learn about their cars. The engine oil keeps things in the engine working smoothly. Lowered levels of engine oil may cause friction between the parts of the engine, which in turn could lead to an eventual breakdown.

2.Transmission Fluid

What engine oil does for the engine, transmission fluid does for the car gears. Since transmission fluid is in a closed system (unlike the engine oil), the amount should never be low. Also, when the fluid is brownish in color, no longer red, and smells burned, it’s time to change it.

3.Coolant

How many cars have stalled because they’ve overheated? Yes, that’s correct. The coolant keeps the vehicle from overheating. It can be found inside the radiator. There are important considerations though when replacing coolants: never do it when the car is on or hot, and never add a different type of coolant than the one in the car.

4.Brake Fluid

Another fluid that’s part of a closed system and should never be low or dirty. This is important to safety as it keeps the brakes working properly. It should be colored gold, not brown. If it’s the latter, it’s time for a change.
